Diesel engine options?
I tried searching the site but didn't have alot of luck finding specific answers.
I currently own a 1995 toyota truck, 4x4 22re 5 spd
The 22re is in need of a rebuild so i have started entertaining the idea of a diesel engine swap. Perhaps someone out there could list the available diesel power train options and the main concerns when converting a toyota truck. I am curious if there are any engines that would work with the current transmission/transfercase/differentials. This truck is strictly a project vehicle so down time is of no consequence.
thanks very much in advance

Im sure you didnt choose good search keywords because there are quite a few threads on diesel swaps. the search feature is a little lacking though.
Anyway Ive seen people use the VW I think its a 1.6 turbo or something like that. I would think almost anything would fit given you have the proper adapter plate for the tranny. Try another search use words like "diesel" "diesel swap" or things like that try to pick key words you think someone might use in the title or body of the thread. That should yield the best results.

about the only diesels i've heard of people being able to put into toyota's are...well..Toyota Diesel's from overseas..which would be best choice...i believe they are just straight bolt in...umm...cummins makes the 4cyl diesel that puts out 105hp and 220 lb ft of torque stock...but that can bumped up to over 200hp and over 600lb ft of torque...with the turn of a few screws on the motor...next is the VW...there is a 1.6 turbo diesel VW motor.. which was used ni the old rabbits and jettas back in the 80's and early 90's i believe..then VW went to the 1.9L turbo diesel...which is more common and a lot better motor all around..VW motors you can get from junkyards...or craigslist.org...4bt you can get from Cummins new...or through craigslist every now and then..or check out 4BTswaps.com they'll help you find one..and give LOTS more info than i can...the toyota diesel is tricky..you have to buy that overseas...and you only get the front half of the vehicle (called a half cut) because the laws require it that way...because once they cut the vehicle in half..its not longer a vehicle...its parts...but i think it's close in price to a 4BT...and a used 4bt in good shape goes for about $3000..new they are about $5000...high miles they are abotu $2000..toyota diesels are about the same...but come with EVERYTHING YOU NEED to do the swap..and i mean EVERYTHING...motor tranny..t-case wiring harness...all that...adapter plates are made by a few different companies to do a 4bt or a VW 1.9 swap...hope this helps some..like previous poster said...use the search a lil more..theres a guy who put a VW 1.9 into a 3rd gen 4x4 truck...VERY VERY VERY informative thread..so check it out...good luck!

My build is in my tag. I have since yanked it out after driving most of last summer. It was good but I just needed a bit more power for hauling wood. I think if I was to do it again I would get a half-cut from overseas. I think a 2.4L Turbo diesel would be perfect for these trucks.
