traditionally 5% differance between cylinders is acceptable .. any more indicates and "issue" ..

I would say you have an issue ...

although it will probabally run well like that for years .. this is what they say !!!!!

Are the '87 and '91 22re's that much different? The FSM for my '91 says max 171 psi, and min 142 psi....

Trust me those numbers are fine. That 22re will run like that for a long time.

Did you remember to release the reading after #4 in the first run and all through the second?

but 135 ain't bad on the low side... it's getting there but should last for probably another 50000. you may have some hard to pinpoint idle issues with that much between high and low, and maybe go through plugs a little fast, but that could be a valve adjustment away from clearing up.

you did take out all the plugs and made sure push the gas pedal down when you did it right? Funny thing because I also did a compression test on my 88 this morning and the first time i did neither of the above and got numbers in the 140's and I was really freaked out cause I just rebuilt the motor and it runs sweet. So I made sure I was doing the test correct and sure enough I wasn't, on the second pass I did it the right way and got 165 PSI on all 4!

Why push the gas pedal down? I've never heard that. If it's in the FSM, I definitely overlooked it.

Always open the throttle blades(wot) and pull the plugs for a compression check.

I'll bite, why push the gas in? The intake is still open with the gas at idle or WOT. What gives?

Apparently has something to do with volume of air induction into the cylinders. Someone correct, clarify, or otherwise expound.......please.

now that I think about it, last time I did a compression check (eh a year ago) remember being told to do it with WOT... man, my memory blows. Probably all the beer I drink =p

WOT eliminates the throttle plate as a possible cause of low compression since all the air that is possible gets past the throttle. then you're only stuck with valves and rings (and maybe exhaust restrictions, but not likely).
then you can squirt some oil in the plug hole to help seal the rings and rule them in or out.
having all the plugs removed allows the engine to spin at the highest possible rate

Yeah....thanks, Kirk. Ya know.......in all the people I've talked to about it, no one has ever pointed out the WOT bit nor has anyone really explained it to me. This is even though I've run several compression tests over the years. I mean, it's not been very often and no more than half a dozen times, but still....I have to really wonder what my results WOULD have been and how I could've overlooked that one little step. Man.....slap me again and tell me I like it!

Atleast Drew has a decent excuse....
