I had a tread in the 85-85 trucks forum, mainly because I initially thought it was something with the front end and I have a SAS up front.

However it turns out it was the ring gear and pinion - mainly the pinion is completely torn up:




My question is this -
What is needed to replace the ring gear and pinion? I'm ordering a new set today from trail-gear. I do know you need to adjust depth, backlash, etc but I'm not too sure on specifics. Is this something that could feasibly done or should I take it somewhere?
Anyone know on typical labor costs to swap out gears?

I think the last set I had set up ran me about $200, but that was nearly 10 years ago.

Will need a master install kit too. Be a nice time to install a locker if you had ever planned on doing one. No real special tools other than a micrometer, gear marking compound, dial indicator, and a press for the carrier bearings. Torque wrench, victor wrench (torch, or oven), and a feeler gauge are also nice to have while setting up gears. And I'd go with a solid spacer over a crush sleeve, but that's just me.

Minus the press and MAYBE an oxy acetylene torch, I'd imagine these are common tools in most folk's garages. If not, WHY not?

Eh - I decided to buy new gears and a bearing kit from trail-gear and have someone else do it... it's still not too expensive.

Also, I already have front/rear detroit lockers...
