know that in most cases factory original is better than aftermarket. Heres the problem though. I need a new fron CV axle and a reman from Toyota is over $200. and one from O'reiley's is like $70. I have seen the thread for dieselloco427 and the issues he is having with an aftermarket axle. What is the best option for the least cash?

i got one for my 89 at parts plus for $95. the brand on the box is "mevotech" and i didn't have any issues.

I am under the impression if you buy a "refurb" at the parts store instead of "new" they are generally rebuilt with toyota parts.

Aftermarket is junk.

TC and I have an almost identical drive train: Same tcases, same diff gears, same tranny gears, same size tires. He is running a 3.0, I have a the 22re. However, there isn't that much more torque out of the 3.0.

I don't break axles, he does. I am running factory toyota stuff, hes running auto zone or some such. Factory is MUCH better. Pick up a junkyard axle, remove the boots, clean the whole thing up, repack with grease, and reattach, or replace, the boots.

Of course its possible a truck in the junk yard may have aftermarket CVs on it.

If your going to go with aftermarket, get Cardone CV's. I've talked to a couple of mechanics locally and they've never had problems with them. Although I was looking online and the remans don't come with the grease seal that goes between the outer CV and the spindle, but the new ones do. Thought that was interesting. Anyway - rockauto.com has them for $60 (new?) and 170 with $100 core (reman?) those prices seem reversed to me though...

I went ahead and ordered a "new" axle from O'reily's this afternoon. They guarenteed that I would have no problems out of it. (showed them my lug wrench and threatened to use it if I had to come back)

I will start an install as soon as I can.

The axle I bought was called "Master Select Pro". Got it from O'Reiley's for around $70. Went in quite easy after I managed to get the bolts broke loose from the dif. That was the hardest part of the whole exchange. The rest was messy due to the old boot having blown out and slinging grease everywhere. Really want to thank "sneaky snake" for his tech write up. That is what save me around $300. This time of year, money is tight, and saving 75% on a repair is great.

I'm running aftermarket CV's from Autozone and haven't had any problems at all. They have a lifetime warranty too so if one does blow at least I won't have to pay for the replacement.

I do wish I'd hung on to the original CV's, though, and just new boots on them.

No wait.......I blew one of them out after already having repaired a boot. That's right! That's why I now have O'Reilly CV's I'll never have to pay for again.....or screw around with changing boots! Rip a boot? Brand new CV. Tehe.....
