Cv axle broken needs replacing
Ok so iv searched and searched and i know i need to replace the cv axle on my 93 runner. Its striped or whatev and just bounces around in its socket. My question that has remained unanswered is where does the shaft connect to and will that be damaged because its been like this for two days now and i have two days left of work before i can get to it. So if i buy two cv axle shaft assemblies one for each side. Will i need anything else other than tools and grease. Anything within the hub etc

Well, the inside end simply bolts to the axle flange.....so no probs there. The outside end fits through the hub and bearings therein. If that's where it's bouncing around, the bearings may just need grease or they're toast. There is a c-clip on the end of the shaft that keeps it locked into the hub. You'll see that once you have the hub apart. It's possible that could be destroyed and in need of replacing, if that's what's causing the bouncing around. But then, I'm not sure you're referring to by "it's socket".

BTW, I was relegated to driving my wife's '92 around for quite some time with a bad CV axle and didn't incur any damage from doing so. So, you might be just fine, in that regard.

Most likely means at some point enough grease was gone and enough moisture was in there that the bearings wore out and fell out.

Can you send me a link to a guide like this for an 87 Runner?
Thanks.

93runner223: don't be surprised to see some space between the axle and the brass bushing that press into the inner and outer spindle holes, there is suppose to be a little space as they are simply a "buffer" to keep the axle's alignment relatively symmetrical. I just ran into a similar situation over the weekend changing ball joints, removed the hub and the axle just fell out from the inner joint, the cage for the bearings was wrecked and no telling how long it had been like that because in 2wd it was asymptomatic and i never knew/noticed it and it hadn't damaged any other parts. Best of luck. Also, I love Toyota's design on their half shafts so that you do not have to fully remove the spindle assembly to pull the axle, God bless Toyota's engineers.
