Cruise light comes on when I hit the brakes, SOLVED!

I have a 91 4rnr w/ v6 manual tranny. The cruise light comes on when I depress the brake pedal. Any ideas as to why?? Already checked the brake fluid (was low) and changed the brake sensor on the cap with another one I had. No change.... What else should I look for? TIA

The problem was in the brake switch that is activated when the brake pedal is pressed. New brake switch, no problem and the cruise works as well.

Hi,

Check your grounds. Many brake light switches are also cruise control disconnect switch. Sounds like you've got 12 volts seeking a ground and it finds it when the brake switch contacts close.

Everytime I hit the brakes, the cruise light comes on and stays on. I can turn the light off by pushing the off switch on the steering wheel, but it will come back on again when I use the brakes.

I will check the ground(s) on the engine. Where else? I know that the brake turns the cruise off, but I have never seen a situation like mine... Where the cruise light comes on when I apply the brake....

to expand-
most of the circuits are switched grounds (not switched 'hot' like you'd expect) so if there's an easy path to ground back through some connected circuit, the voltage will go there and may cause a light or two to glow... like when the alternator goes out the charge light AND the brake light illuminate.
Find the wiring diagrams and start troubleshooting.

Here is what I have found so far.... No bad grounds, the trailer wiring is in great shape (actualy inside of the left rear compartment) and the cruise light comes on when the engine is not running. Key on, depress brake and the cruise light comes on....so, I am going to take the steering wheel off, see if that is the culprit, if not, then I will take the column apart and see if I can find the problem. Any other thoughts??

Still trying to find the problem. I took the steering wheel off and disconnected the wire harness in the steering column. No change. I also removed the added trailer harness and rear lights, no change....What else????? All of the wiring underneath looks great, I cannot find anything that looks remotely wrong or worn.

Hi,

not sure if the switch on the pedal for the brake and cruise is one switch or two separate ones. If it is a combined switch, try replacing it, it may have internal issues.

Thanks for the idea, the switch has 4 wires connected to it. So I am going to replace it with another and see what happens.....Just a bugger to get at ...
