cracked head? 22re
i rebuilt my 22 rec in my 88 yota pick up and 5 or so miles later my truck acts like it did when i first got it (blown head gasket) so after few choice words i toar it back down to find a perfect shape head gasket. as i sat the head down on my work bench i noticed several small cracks one of which goes in from the middle of the head to the cylinder where the vavle and spring sits in the head. so my question of many question to follow will be...1) is the head pachable, like JB weld?2) if not and i have to get a new or used head will the cam and vavles and all the parts on the head work on the new one.3) are there differnt configuration in the head, for ex. i know mine is fuel injected will there be a difference in say my buddys carburated head.

here's my understanding. The only differences in the 22 heads is that the early models (pre 85)had different shaped ports than the later (85 and later) heads.
These heads are pretty easy to fix most anything on. I have seen some that had completely rotted out between the water jacket and combustion are that were built back up (aluminum welded NOT JB WELDED) and milled back down and worked fine. If you know a good machine shop they should be able to handle it.
NOTE TO SELF: if you ever have another head gasket job take my advice and not only have the head checked (and likely milled) and PRESSURE TESTED! it cost $30 at my local shop......WAY cheaper than another tear down.

Others have said it, i will repeat it. Engnbldr.com. Just got my parts from him and i'm very impressed, especially for the price. You'll know you're getting a quality part.

I've said it. And I'll say it again... www.engnbldr.com
Prices may come as a surprise, but a head is going to be a little pricey. And to be honest, engnbldr is very reasonable. Quality is outstanding.

I'll say the same thing. I have their new cast head with the oversized stainless valves and a 261 cam. Just do yourself a favor and call them and talk to them. If you are asking a question about another vendor and its a used head, don't bother. None of us can remove that skepticism. I built my motor last year and have almost 4000 miles on it. Runs like a champ. 500 bucks for the yota is a good deal. Do what you want, its up to you how you spend money, I prefer state of mind to boot.

Your initial deal was about a cylinder head. Both other options you mentioned will cost much more. Depending on where you are in your state you are either very flat or mountainous.
I suggest you learn a lot more before sinking any more money into it. You think the head is expensive? Add up the diesel. Only assuming you've got or have a good source for everything needed for the 350 swap.
Sounds like a cracked head was reinstalled. I bought a used motor before I rebuilt my motor. It cost me an extra 325 dollars, po swore it "just needed a head gasket." I bought it knowing I needed minimal a good crank, my original motor ate the 3rd connecting rod bearing, thus ate the crank on the same bearing surface. For 325 bucks I could have bought a reground crank for 200 shipped. The used motor had a cracked head I missed, sent the used motor's head and crank with my block and a combination of rods for the machinist to pick through.
Still bought a brand new head, best purchase I made. Especially after the bullsh#t I put myself through.
