coolant filter

I have a 93 V6, auto with 97K. It sat for a long time.

I can flush and fill and get nice clean water, if I fill let it warm up and drain, there is lots of brown in it. I have done this 5 times and it is getting boring.

So I am thinking an inline coolant filter, did some web searching and wondering if any one has McGivered a one time use cheap coolant filter?

I see an inline hose filter for RV's that might be easy to jury rig in the heater hoses, But some of my thoughts do not pass inspection.

I would think if you have that much gunk in there it would clog the filter pretty quick. I would not jury rig a filter in because its getting boring. Probably needs a new radiator. And while you're at it, new hoses, and thermostat.

A filter that is any good will be clogged in no time since most are built with a bypass it would just be a waste of money.

It will take time to clean all the rust out.

How many years did it sit??

Over a 14 year period it had very little use. How long it sat unused is anyones guess. When I bought it there were 14 year old tires with lots of thread left on them. I have replaced radiator, hoses, belts, including timing, water pump, AC parts an endless list.
I replaced the radiator because of a leak and out of curiosity cut the bottom off to see how much gunk was there, the inside of the radiator was very clean, not what I expected to find.
Coolant filters are commonly used on the big rigs. Thanks for the responses, Jim

Doing a bit of searching on this I found a thread where someone documented a coolant filter experiment. For anyone that might be interested.

One thing to run a Coolant filter on a engine your using

Another to install one on a engine you know still has rust in.

I run a coolant filter on my 7.3

Ran them for years on my Cats

Bottom line it your $$$ Go for it can`t really hurt.

Just use a basic Prestone flush, follow the directions, clean out the system.

Have you removed the thermostat and removed the block plug to flush the block?

I would probably try disconnecting and flushing the block, heater core, and radiator by themselves then maybe try a chemical flush.
Then do a follow up flush with water from the hose, then with distilled water, drain all, then fill with Toyota red and distilled water. Overkill... but that's me

RMI-25 is supposed to clean out the coolant system slowly and gently. I have used it with no ill effects.

I also installed a coolant filter. Not worth the trouble.
