Coolant in Exhaust

I am a recent member (not so recent owner) and have a tricky problem I can't diagnose.

I have a '86 PU 22R - 4cyl - carb - stock - 170k - daily driver.

I had a recent 'head gasket failure' that resulted in a steam funnel from the tailpipe. Got hot but never pegged the gauge.

Replaced head gasket and torqued everything down - still constant coolant exhaust.

Brand new head from Engnbldr - Street RV and torkrCam!

Cleaned EVERYTHING - still steam!!!!!!!!

It has new many things - inc. timing chain & cover plus all the usual items - plugs etc.

Ideas????!

head warped....

I'd never put a head back on any engine that didn't go to the machine shop 1st...

Or you can buy the hyper accurate "machinists straightedge" for a $100 or 2...

Yup, it's all new. I even took a short test drive, pulls like a champ (thanks Ted).

I'm pretty confident that all went back together correctly. The problem was the same after replaced the gasket before I pulled it ALL off again to wait for a new head.

Still baffled. Thinking intake manifold....

it might be burning off coolant that collected in the muffler. i replaced a motor in a truck that had blowed the head gasket ,when i started it up it poured water and steam like crazy out the tail pipe until it dried out.

I wouldn't think it would take very long to burn of residual coolant in the exhaust sytem maybe one day of long travel or 2. But then again coolant is made to withstand high temps...

Maybe pull it on to the steepest incline you can find and let it run for a bit so gravity can help pull out any extra fluid.

That sounds like too much wrenching for me lol. Like I said, I'd park it on the steepest place I could find... Or maybe I'm just lazy =)

hope you get it drained out and that's all it is man.

I'm interested in hearing about what you found out. I'm also having head gasket issues with my 22re.

Is the coolant level in the radiator actually going down? Or are you just seeing some white smoke out the exhaust? I would re-torque the head bolts for one thing, just to make sure.

Talking

Well boys, you did it. I pulled the exhaust, no water. Pulled the plugs, no coolant spitting. I idled the thing for 1/2 hur, solid temps and steam CLEARED!!!!!

Just got back from test drive and everything seems great. Going to reset the valves and call it good (oh and join AAA finally!)

You guys ROCK; thanks to SWAMPFOX and BLUE PETERSON77

Glad it was something simple for ya man. I got 206755 on the clock and already dreading the whole head gasket scene!... Eh, maybe I can get to 300000 before it goes (crosses fingers and toes)
