My ability to work on my Toyota is limited. I know just enough to get in trouble, but I am not afraid to learn as I go... This winter I let the gas get below 1/4 tank in my 87 Pickup 22re Auto. Ping, ping, ping... It started running rough, felt like it was missing.

I recalled the fact that condensation might have gotten drawn in and dry gas might help. I gave it a shot and about midway through the tank the issue went away.

Then, every so often, it would miss again, regardless of fuel level. Now its back, and its constant. Any ideas?

Did you replace the fuel filter ?, if not, try doing that and see if it helps.

If you replace the filter, and cant get it unscrewed, just cut the lines and use 1/4" fuel injector hose and any generic 1/4" fuel filter (under $10) So easy to do, takes me 10 minutes to replace it.

Also you might want to think about doing a tune-up. Plugs wires, cap & rotor, ect. Use NGK or Denso.

Thanks for the replies... I replaced all those this last fall. And the fuel filter was tricky! Didn't do the cap & rotor though... So I'll check that.

I had some water get into my tank last year (forgot to put the gas cap back on then it rained the next morning) STP makes a product that allows the water to blend in with the gas. My case was pretty severe and it still did the trick. Ran crappy till the watered down gas was gone but after that it was like nothing happened.

A pint of isopropyl alcohol (a.k.a. "rubbing alcohol") and fill up the tank should help get the water out of the tank.

Here's the thing: water mixes with alcohol, alcohol mixes with fuel, so adding alcohol to the fuel cause the water to pass through.

Last I saw, a bottle of "Heet" or fuel drier / water remover was like 3 dollars for a pint... and rubbing alcohol is that much for a quart or more.
