Code 42 but I have a mechanical cable?

OK... I got some help in another thread diagnosing my check engine light. Turns out it is CODE 42... Speed Sensor.

However, I have a mechanical cable... it is not electric so I don't believe I have a speed sensor. The cable is turned at the transfer case and spins the speedo gauge in the cluster... nothing electrical or sensor related that I can figure out.

Anyway, I have a cable for sure (was just looking at it), speedo does NOT work, I have trouble code 42 ... plz someone explain.. my eyes are burning from searching lol

there is also a VSS for abs. We had a little run around a few times at the dealer getting the wrong part off a VIN. i am not sure on this but a 91 might be new enough to be equipped?

I recently received the same code except mine is from a 4phase 3wire - marlin adapter - rf1a cable case issue i think. on a 94 sr5 runner.

You sure you don't have rear ABS on your pickup? I know my 4Runner has, for sure and should have become standard on pickups in 1989, far as I can find out.

It might only work in 2WD.

The speed sensor might apply to tranny shifting or cruise control.

The FSM should indicate what the code is for.

Did the cable break/pop off from the back of the cluster? When I had a code 42, it was my gauge cluster. I believe the code/error is No.1 sensor (which would be the tiny motor in the gauge cluster).

In the cable speedos, the VSS is a mechanical reed switch inside the speedometer. If your speedometer isn't working, the vss isn't either. Prob a bad cable, possibly a broken speedo. The VSS can trigger a governor feature that cuts fuel when the toyota engineers think you're driving too fast; not sure what else it does.
