the sound is so annoying. it stops when i press the clutch in when im in gear driving on the road or just idling at a light in neutral. could it be the throwout bearing. and is it bad to keep on driving if its the throwout bearing. i think i have too much freepedal, have to check that out tomorrow. any help will be greatly appreciated.

sounds like its time for a new clutch with throw out bearing. sounds like a throw out bearing. And one you tear into it to replace it you might as do a whole clutch kit on it. And i'd replace rear main seal too. And dont' forget to resurface the flywheel.

X2 on the throw out bearing. It might be a press on bearing depending on which clutch kit you get. I would just get a new flywheel. I picked up one a few days ago for $60 from checker.

x3 on it being the throw out bearing. I had some similar noises in mine that would only go away when the rig was in gear and I put a little resistance on the tranny. I did my clutch this weekend and although it was a little time consuming it went very easy. It also saved me 600$ that the local shop wanted to charge. I got a kit from Napa that had the clutch disc, throw out bearing, pressure plate and pilot bearing. I didn't need to resurface the flywheel since there were no "hot spots" or anything like that.


Oh and if you do it yourself be sure and use wet newspaper to get the pilot bearing out instead of grease, the damn grease just shoots out everywhere.

Yup its your throwout bearing (release bearing) Thats usually the indication when it goes away when clutch is engaged.

I'm not sure if that's the only reason for surfacing a flywheel. I always thought it was so the new clutch had a fresh surface to make new wear patterns in, like a new piston/rings in a honed cylinder. You wouldn't want to put a new piston and rings into a cylinder that has wear patterns from an old piston.

truck also makes that sound in gear and it stops when i press the clutch. but the sound goes away right away. if the sound went away after a few secs it would be like a screwed up tranny input bearing. what place do you guys think have good clutch kits.people have been telling me the dealer sells good kits.

x2. Defantly resurface your flywheel when doing a clutch. Its not that expensive and its the right way!

so when you adjust a clutch, do you press down on the pedal and then turn the adjusting bolts, or just turn the adjusting bolt without pressing the clutch pedal. here is the link

Newspaper? That's great!! I've used grease twice, worked great the first time but the second time it just blew out the dust shield and I was screwed!

Wouldn't a throw out bearing make noise when the clutch pedal is pressed? The throw out bearing doesn't do anything until you press the clutch, why would it be making noise when the clutch pedal wasn't pressed in?

I've had them be noisy as hell when you press the clutch in, but never heard a noisy one when the clutch pedal wasn't being used.

I have a friend with a Taco that has this chirpping noise when you sit in neutral, as soon as you press the clutch pedal in, the chirpping stops. Can the throw out bearing be "chirpping" even without pressing the clutch pedal in?

But will a throw out make noise unless it's engaged by pushing the clutch pedal?
