"don't think so" doesn't mean "I know not so"
you're saying that the noise occurs when 4wd is engaged, so that implies that the problem is in front of the transfer case. so what turns and what can make noise when that happens?
Those things are your primary culprits.

k so theres 3 round things that go into the truck part and is coming from the wheel part. the seperation is at the rubber boot. the pic is of one of 3 washers? that go on the round things, i had to drive the truck today so i think i lost the 3rd one on the road. how big of a fix is this?

the cv joint with the 3 round thingy's is usually refered to as a tripod joint. it's the 'inner' joint on the cv shaft, and actually the part least likely to wear since it doesn't deal with the extreme angles that the outer joint does.

some one posted up a how to replace the CV thread the other day I did one on a camey last week it was a 2 hour job next time I think I can knock it down to a hour.
it seems to be really close to the same as the trucks get your self a flat pry bar to pull it out at the diff getting the new one back in was the hassle getting the C clip to snap in was a pain.
don't rush take your time.
