cleaning my shifter seat and found strange debris

like the title says, i was checking out my shifter seat and found my actual seat to be in fine condition, but i found what appears to be remnants of some sort of seal or maybe an old shifter seat down where the shifter swivels. Also there was a bunch of grime and dirt in the top part of the cup.

Any ideas on what all this could have been? Im just trying to figure out if it is okay to go ahead and reassemble it the way it is or not.

That rubber ring is what is left of your shifter seat and the debris is the telltale sign. Buy a new shifter seat and bushing.

Mine looked exactly like that too. I just cleaned it all off, added a bit of new grease then reassembled it with a new seat from Marlin Crawler and life is good!

pretty common issue, I just wish my retainer was not rusted in...

oh and for some reason i photobucket says all your images have been deleted or moved...make yourself a folder? it breaks the direct links

thanks...wow, i did not know that was what was LEFT of my seat. Ya i was trying to delete all the old pics and put smaller ones in because i somehow uploaded them at a HUGE resolution. Ive been working on getting htem fixed and my internet has been a dog lately.

Just put in my order for both the shifter seat and teh socket I also grabbed a clutch fork boot since i never had one when i did my 5 speed swap. all three only cost me 29.87 or something like that.

Cant wait to get the new seat in so I can get it in. My shifter was already really crisp, so I cant wait to see how it is going to be with a brand new shifter seat in it!

You will be amazed. I did the upgrade on my 89 and the shifting is worlds better now, I don't know how I lived with it before sicne it was so sloppy.

Ya thats what everyone has been saying, but to tell you the truth; mine wasnt even bad at all. I will get a vid up tomorrow of how it is even without a seat bushing in it.

after 297,000 miles mine had the same black rubber ring remaining. The majority portion of the shifter seat was long gone.

Another question...When i get the new shifter seat in, do I put the rubber ring on top of it or just run it with nothing but the new seat? I dont want to get rid of the black rubber and and up need it on top of the marlin one.

Also how did yall grease it up? Just put a little bit of bearing grease in there or something else?

I tried to do mine today. It looked pretty much the same. Shifting had gradually become more sloppy over the years, but it wasn't horrible. What caused me to finally address the situation is on occasions I'd have trouble shifting into first. I think parts of broken seat would sometimes work into the wrong position. Now that I found one of the pins is broken, that may have also played a role.

You're not supposed to use anything with the Marlin seat. That rubber ring is what's left of your original.

The bushing on the end of the shifter gets bathed in transmission oil, so don't bother lubing it. I plan on greasing the shifter where it rides on the seat, though oil may get slung up there too.

x2. don't try to use the rubber ring w/ the new marlin seat. go ahead and use some multi-purpose grease on the new socket and seat.

Yeah that's a little sloppy. The new seat will eliminate all of the "wobble" in the gears. Mine was so bad that in nuetral the stick would bounce around on it's own. I could throw it in N and take a turn and the stick would lean towards the outside of the turn, of course my seat bushing and the one on the end of the stick were 100% gone.

Be sure and post up a video when you get the new ones installed. It's the best 17$ I ever spend on something like this. But then again I've bought 1000$+ worth of stuff from Marlin.

haha dang! thats some pretty bad slop, but i bet it was also pretty fun to watch haha.

O i will def make sure and post up another video once i get the shifter seat in. I hear ya on spending thousands of dollars on these trucks. PERIOD.

Min elooked the same way. I have video up showing how bad mine was, then how good the marlin peices made it

It was a pain to clean out all that chunky crap

Just slobber it up with the grease of your choice...you can pack a little extra into those sectional cutouts on the shifter ball. The Marlin replacement seat is a hard, solid, nylon-like material, should last along time even with minimal grease.
