I am running test on the Air Flow Meter. These are all the same as well on 22re from 85-92 that I know of Part Number is 22250-35020 and will document those test in the near future.

Might sound stupid but check your air filter. Ive seen some big diesel engines (Cummins 444) run hot because of clogged air filters.

Also check the spray pattern of your injectors, fuel pressure, and make sure the injectors aren't leaking. Raw fuel dribbling into the cylinder during exhaust stroke could be causing the manifold to heat up and a loss of fuel pressure.

I also agree to check your timing and timing advance unit. It the engine leans out the mixture as it heats up and the engine timing stays retarded you would definitely loose power and build heat.

Do you have access to a leak down tester? Check to make sure valves are closing all the way and arent burned up. You can use a compression tester as a makeshift leakdown tester if you remove the shrader valve.

Figured since this thread helped me fix my 22re id post some useful info
I just bought a 1986 4runner two nights ago,on the way home it smelled funny ,like hot oil smell,i was not far from the house so i just eased it on in the driveway, opened hood ,red glowing manifold, just to the collector, long story short i tried the timing, getting the TPS adjusted, changed plugs, made sure cat wasnt clogged, drove it and still getting red hot after a mile.
Popped the valve cover and the valves were all tight ,adjusted them to 8/12 and went for a drive.FIxed runs great, nvere has had great power but manifolds dont glow as fast but after a 10 mile drive they have a light redness still
