the gray box next to the fuse box on the passenger side fender under the hood jump the t1 and te1 terminal and turn the ignition on and count the flashes then consult the FSM or a chiltons manual

Your check engine light will flash. there are however initial conditions that must be met.
Turn on the ignition do not start
With a jumper wire, paper clip, etc. short Tand E1 of the check connector
which is close to the ignition coil on the 2nd generation models. A previous post told you the points to short and the location of the check connector on newer models already.

1-Battery above 11v.
2-Throttle plate fully closed (TPS sensor IDL points closed
3-Transmission in Neutral
4 Accessory switches off
5-Engine at normal operating Temp

Normal operation Code #1 no malfunction 4 seconds light off, .5 seconds light on, 4,5 seconds light off, .5 seconds light on and so on.
If this is the code you get there is nothing wrong, If you do get a code you will need the code list to match up with what you are seeing.

sounds like a code 52, knock sensor. the long (5 sec) pause separates the codes. the shorter pause is in between the 2 numbers in the same code.
