Hi everyone, I had a 95 4Runner before and the headlight housing had actual bulbs in it, where my 1990 truck is a sealed 7x6 unit. Is there anyway to adapt a newer unit into an older truck? I would like to be able to run HIDs on the truck if possible. I bought a adapter kit that lets you use H4 bulbs in that aftermarket 7x6 housing with some HIDs but they are terrible and I was thinking if I could use a factory housing out of a newer truck it would work a lot better. Any feedback is appreciated thanks!

Ok so once again, I will state I have changed out to the housings in those threads, I already have the H4 HID ballasts. I am wondering if I can get a newer housing out of a newer toyota truck/4runner into my old toyota truck.

Did you try upgrading your stock wiring harness for the lights?

I would go get a pair (junkyard) and see if you can get them to fit somehow. Looks like it would be semi easy to get it to work.

Now again if you misses my other 2 posts, I already have the ebay 7x6 housings that accept the H4 bulbs, I already have the HID ballasts and bulbs, they suck and are not any brighter then stock sleaed units and have a terrible cutoff. You can see on my old 4Runner its a different headlight assembly, pretty much the entire grill assembly is different. All I am wondering is if its possible to swap that over into my 1990 truck. Again I already have the cheapo ebay housings and hid ballasts ect ect, not looking for any more info on that. Thanks

Im saying get 4runner grill/headlights out of a junkyard and see if you can get them to fit on your truck.

Ok Ill have to check online for a entire grill assembly. I will take a look at some junkyards locally but when I had my 4Runner I couldnt ever find any toyotas in them.

Okay first off, explain a little better next time, because the headlight style you're wanting to adapt in wasn't only used in 95; in was in a couple previus years too, it's just that they were only on the 4Runners and not the pickups.

In order do the swap, you have to change out the core support and everything else on the front end. On that, once again, search, because it has been done before. I'd post a link, but aparently my efforts at helping you are not good enough nor appreciated.

Elton I can +1 that it not worth the conversion, they arent any better it was a complete waste of money. And to those posting links thanks for the help, to those stating the obvious and saying search...well...yknow. I made it clear enough for myself to understand that I was wanting to swap a 'newer' headlight housing. I used my 95 as a example. never said I wanted to use a 95 4runner because thats the only year they came in. If thats what you read, I apologize. I tried to search and didnt come up with anything. I normally can post up for someone to help on other forums without people being smart about it and saying search. They normally will reply back with a helpful thread.

differences aside, I've heard the light pattern with the composite beams you're wanting to swap for isn't all that great, but a proper HID retrofit could alleviate that

Well I put HIDs on my dodge for s**ts and giggles and they actually turned out pretty good, I just put a set on my girlfriends avalanche today to see if they work well on hers, we will see. I have noticed that while changing out the headlight housings on my toyota that the aim on them got pretty funky, they are quite a bit higher then they should be but regardless I dont think they are very bright at all. I guess we will see if I can find a junked 4runner with that setup and see what happens from there. I never had any issues with my 4Runner, I thought they were plenty bright, had a good pattern, and a good cutoff. I never needed any real light out of them though seeing as I had 6 aftermarket lights upfront. I also had sylvania superstars, or whatever theyre ungodly over priced top of the line bulb was.

I ended up keeping the sealed beam style, but did the composite H4 conversion, made a custom wiring harness, and eventually threw in some Hella H4's, and that setup threw some pretty damn good light

Changing from a sealed beam style headlights to the 92-95 4Runner bulb version requires changing your core support. There are about 25 spot welds to drill out from both your old support and the donor. your can either re-weld it back together or drill holes and bolt it back on. Also, the donor will need to have the same engine as your truck or there will be other issues with the power steering cooler and A/C lines.

I did this this weekend and it's a simple, and very effective upgrade for the stock headlights. Plus you can order the kit for the upgraded lights, unless I'm completely missing your post here, this can help.
