Cause of 5th gear whine?
What causes that 5th gear whine that is so common in the '95 4Runner?
I am putting in a new engine soon and if I can fix this whine while I'm at it I'd really like to.
Also, how much of a problem is a 5th gear whine? Is the tranny likely to die with this type of thing going on?
Thanks for any info on this problem that you can provide.

PS - I did some searching and didn't find the specific answer to this problem. Just so you know, I DID search.

5th gear in 4Runner? 5th gear is going out, more than likely from not getting the oil changed..
ever...
The R trannys are strong...
Prolly cheaper to buy another than fix that one.

I've always had a 5th gear whine in all of my manual transmission vehicles. I just don't worry about it. I had it on my 96 suzuki sidekick with 150k miles and even now on my 89 toyota with 251k miles.

That's one thing you can do... ^^^^^^^^^^^
Just change the oil in it... As long as it doesn't jump out of gear, drive it.

I 2nd that, very common on the yota manual trannys. I have taken apart alota yota manual trannys and have yet to see one with a good input shaft bearing. The whine will just keep getting worse. Also, I bet if you listen close enough, you can hear the noisey bearing in all gears and in nuetral.

So when I swap the engine, can I rake care of that input bearing?
It doesn't jump out of 5th gear, only 1st (and that doesn't happen often).
If I'm going to go ahead with this engine swap, I need to know that this vehicle will go at least 30k miles before breaking significantly. Thoughts?

Yes. You'll need the bearing, some RTV(grey), and you might as well replace the input shaft seal while you're at it. Good luck pulling it without opening the transmission housing though. But, you might be clever enough to figure out how to without. I'm sure could if I had to. I'm a genius though so...
