Can't set TDC. Head gasket 22r

Hi all. I've done some searching and can't find an answer for this. I was given an 87 2wd p/u with a 22r. It's sat for 3 years since the head gasket blew. Im tearing it down to pull the head and I cant get the motor to tdc. I get about a quarter turn before the engine locks. Could a valve be bent? Hydrolocked? Ive pulled the plugs, still only goes a 1/4 turn. Maybe it's hitting a rust ring? Can I continue on pulling the head without the motor in TDC? Does that make reassembly a pain?
thanks for any input.

It is not necessary to set the engine to any particular position when disassembling it.

All positioning to facilitate valve timing is done on engine reassembly.

Just take that sucker apart, No worries!!

The fact that it won't turn over a full rev is a little troubling, but you will find out why that is when you get it apart.

Right on, that's the answer I was looking for.

I know the previous owner(my neighbor) backed this truck into its current spot under its own power. So hopefully nothing catastrophic is wrong. He said it had over heating problems and he finally parked it after it started smoking white one day.

thanks for the info!
