I have a 92 Toyota pickup that didn't come with ac is it possible to put one in abd how much would it probably cost ?

Its possible but it would be expensive to have a shop do it. Still be time consuming and a pain even if you did it yourself.

Best bet is to find a donor, keep an eye on here for part outs or a fresh unit at a junk yard, also be ready to either buy a reman compressor or a new OEM one. Most you will get from the yard either don't work or need rebuilt. From a donor and having my mechanic do it was about 800 bucks. Just read a post on here where a member took it to a shop and bought all new components and it ran him a little over 2 grand, so doing your homework and finding a donor will be worth your time unless you have that kind of cash just burning a hole through your pocket......

wow $800 to go from no AC to yes AC in the truck seems cheap . I was quoted well over $1,000 to get it going on my 'Runner.

And I agree , it does look like a complicated install but I guess that is all relative .

When I bought my runner about 4 years ago it had a broken aftermarket ac system.
My wife insisted on AC so I had a shop I trust install a new kit for about $1200; by far the single most expensive mod I've done. Its worked out OK but if I were to do it again I would try to replicate a Toyota factory set-up.

The hardest part is the wiring harness but there is a high chance because its a 92 that its already there.


The parts gathering can be easy if you can find a junkyard donor, A 4Runner will work since there common but you have to get the whole cab heater/AC assembly as there physically different then the PU but they mount in the same exact holes.


The only thing I had to hack putting the 92 4R H/AC assembly into my pickup was the plug for the blower motor plug was different and just splicing the one from the 4R to the PU harness. (The 4R cooling element is almost 2x the surface then the PU)


You will possibly have to drill 3 hold if there isn't grommets in the firewall already, 2 for the element and 1 drain hose, Don't skimp on the drain hose or you will hate yourself face palm style.

I added AC to my 87' 4Runner and it was actually very easy. You will have to drill 3 holes but the sheet metal is already dimpled where the holes should go. I just swapped parts directly over from my parts truck and was G2G.

I haven't done one but have been told the wiring is all there. You need the box with ac evaporator out a donor truck, you have to drill holes through firewall where dimples are for evap lines. Under hood you need compressor and ac lines. In front of radiator you need dryer and condenser. So definitely best to get most of the parts from a donor vehicle.
