I have a 87 pickup. When I start the truck it idles great and runs decent. until it starts to warm up, then it gets progressivly worse until I can almost not drive at all. It pops and misses and backfires under load but revs fine in neutral. then once it is warm it idles rough and just about dies. after searching this forum, I think I need to replace the injectors. The ? is how hard is it to remove the injectors. I have fixed alot of things in the past on several vehicles but dont know about this. also what else should I check before trying this? truck has 160,000 miles. probably need to have injectors cleaned anyways.

Have you checked ignition timing? It can cause those symptoms, and it's a lot easier to check than getting to the injectors. (And I'm not even going to ask whether you've checked for codes.)

I am not proud. I dont know how to check the ignition timing? I also dont know how to check codes? If anyone would take time to explain it to me I would really appreciate it.

also, I dont know if this ia a factor but i drove in a rain storm to get to work and when i left work the problem started. could be a coincedence but just wanted to put it out there.

This sounds stupid and I don't want to sound lazy;you may have some big problems with your rig but I picked up a 86EFI for $300 for a parts truck because the kid told me the engine was blown. I towed it home, replaced the battery and terminals and it fired up. It ran awful and I didn't want to put any money into it as I was still building my 85 so I dumped a can of seafoam in the oil and fuel tank. It ran really good. eventually the timing chain went bad so I'm replacing that this weekend. So I would toss in a can of seafoam. If it doesn't do anything you're only out ten bucks and no labor.

Just read you're last post. Check to see if you have any exposed wires that may have been effected by the moisture...or vacuum lines. I'm not an EFI guy so I'm just throwing some dumb guesses out that I would try first If I was you

Everybody has to start somewhere. But if you don't know how to check for codes (or timing), replacing injectors will be quite a challenge. More so because you don't have enough knowledge (yet) to diagnose whether that's the problem at all. (While a lot of us have benefited from cleaning injectors, it's not a "maintenance item", and you'll do well to eliminate a lot of other causes first.)

Continue with www.autoshop101.com. Not too basic, and very Toyota focussed.
