Running bad fuel, failing 02 sensor causing rich condition, just a few possibilites. I take it that the old one was not a OEM alot of after market cats are not made as well and last as long as OEM's. Its a big racket in California selling Aftermarket cats for as little as $150.00 installed.

You will probably if you keep the truck will have to do it again 5 or 6 years from now.

The aftermarket ones commonly sold in CA do not last anywhere near the life of the original OEMs. I just had one replaced that lasted 4 years.
