Hello everyone! I have an 89 4Runner DLX with the 22RE. My ac compressor shot craps on me so I'm doing an A/C overhaul starting with a new compressor. I ordered a new compressor from a place here in town and when I got home I realized it had the wrong kind of pulley on it. (I have the V-type pulleys.) I called back up there and he said the only option they had for an 89 was the ribbed belts.

My question is which model years should have the same compressor as mine? He said 88 had both options, a v-type and a ribbed type, but they were significantly more expensive. He also said some of the early 90's model trucks had the same V-type pulley.

If it makes any difference my system was running R-12 and I will be converting to Duracool 12a. All I know is it is hot as the dickens here in Missouri and this riding around with my top off isn't really working anymore!

As far as i've seen the 4 cylinder ones are not innerchangable with the v6 ones if that helps.
Let me ask you this, was it the compressor or the compressor clutch? as it doesn't take much to replace the clutch.

To be honest I don't really know what kind of condition the rest of the compressor is in. The air never worked when I bought the truck and one day the pulley just seized up on me and ate through my belt. I figured I'd go ahead and replace the whole thing since it had been sitting for 5 years without being ran.

Yeah I knew the V6 ones wouldn't work but I have no clue on whether or not the 4 cyl compressors are interchangeable between years. I imagine somewhere in the mid 90's they converted over to R134a...

By inputing basic 4Runner (2.4L) info into Toyota Parts East website, the parts fiche brings up the A/C image of the compressor with a V-belt. Part number 88320-35340. Since I did not have your specific VIN I could only use basic 4Runner info. Your VIN may bring up different information.

Using that part number & searching Toyota Parts Zone brings up all (supposedly) the models that use that parts number. The same can't be done for Toyota Parts East.

So, it looks like the actual compressor is used on 4Runners from build date April 1989 through August 1991.

The A/C clutch, part number 88410-35150, is used from build date April 1989 through November 1995.

Now Denso Aftermarket website does show two different part number to the A/C compressor assembly, both with clutches. This is just a basic link to their website. You will have to input your vehicle info.

Once you get it all sorted out let me know. I'm also run R-12 and would like to know of other options that actually work.

Thanks Slow-mo...that helps a ton! I put in my VIN into the parts east website and came up with a compressor part number of 88320-35220. I put that number into parstzone and it says trucks and 4Runners from 87-08 to 89-03 use that compressor. The clutch part number for mine was 88410-14100 and partszone shows 84-03 to 89-03 use that clutch. I guess that means I am narrowed down to finding a compressor for an 87 to 89 truck or 4runner.

Thanks again! I will let you know how the swap to Duracool goes when I get it done. Now if I can only find the time...
