I'm in the process of doing the same. I started by replacing the fittings, and made sure there was no refridgerent in the system, began filling, and within about 5 seconds the pressure (low side) flew up to 65 psi... eek, let a little escape, and still will not produce cold air. Does this mean I need to check my compressor?'
Thanks

and still no cold air?
clogged up some where it sounds like... I wouldn't run the a/c... in fact you may have already just damaged the compressor if if made all that noise. Probably made the noise because there was no oil in the compressor. My first guess would be the expansion valve; usually the cause of a bad clog. Have you had the system open (ie: lines taken off the comressor) ?
When adding the freon, the pressure should slowly build, it'll start to get a little high, then the compressor should kick on, and it'll drop considerably. There's a fine line between just right and over-full on these truck's I've found. Not sure about the exact pressure or fluid ounce level, but on my 91 22re, if you don't have it filled just right, the compressor kicks on and off. Too much, and it acts like it puts too much of a load on the compressor...
I would suggest having someone try to vaccum out the system...

Hey get your friend who does HVAC to charge you up with the old 12. I used to work for an HVAC company and they stock the old stuff for all the old crap they service.
