Burning Smell at High RPMs

Hello Yotatech!

I have a 1988 4Runner, automatic, V6. Just had my brakes redone and paid a lot for it just before I posted on the forum and was informed that I was totally ripped off. Trying to avoid that now!

I'm not sure if this is with other trucks: When I want to go into a lower gear for going up hills I put the pedal down to the floor and the vehicle down shifts, upping the RPMs to 3000. Recently when doing that I've been smelling a burning smell on the driver's side.

I've been reading some of the other posts and I've gotten that it might be something with my clutch but I haven't had any problems shifting. A clutch valve disc maybe? I don't have a ton of experience with the clutch so any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Peter

you dont have a clutch.

you have an automatic, you have a torque convertor.

Thanks Shawn. That is an important thing to know!

It's a really faint smell of burning rubber. I checked the tires and have been smelling around the entire vehicle.

Hmm rubber....

Maybe a hose or something, check around the exhaust manifoilds (under the hood) for a hose touching them or any signs of something being melted.

Do you see any smoke coming out of the exhaust when you smell it? Hows your oil level? My truck burns a little oil and i can smell it when i shut her off.

Ok, I'll check for any hoses getting burnt... If it is a hose are they easy to replace or move to stop the burning?

There's no smoke. I just changed the oil although I was using really cheap oil before so I thought that maybe that it was burning some of the cheap oil that was left over.

I'm really glad it's not anything to do with the gears. Thanks for schooling me on the manual vs. automatic.

Automatics do have clutches, many of them. Just not the kind you have in a standard.

Just to clarify. haha

If you think it might be tranny related, check your fluid level, condition of fluid and if it has a burnt smell.

I get what I call the 'old hot american car smell' coming from underneath the truck sometimes. I finally figured out that it was excess grease thrown off the front the rear propeller shaft and onto the catalytic converter.

Stop pushing your Gerbils so hard. You're burning up their Nike, Vans and Converse shoes... that's what's causing the rubber smell.

But other than that, with no sign of smoke, no way of seeing where it's coming from.... not many ways to figure out what's leaking nor where it's coming from.
