Yesterday I was out wheeling and my speedo/odo stopped working. I thought from what I've read that there is usually a CEL associated with this, but mine hasn't shown yet. After it broke I wheeled for a couple more hours and drove 50 miles home, but still no CEL.

What is usually the culprit in this case, and how difficult is it to replace?

The truck is a 94 4x4 22re 5-speed

There will be no Check Engine Light.

Easy to replace, just make sure and get a new one from the dealer. It will fit and you wont have to make one work from a general kit most auto part stores sell. Well worth the money.

The hardest part is taking the dash apart to get to the back of the odometer. The other end in the back of the T-case is simple to get too. Then just fish it forward where the old one is kept on the frame rails.

My 4x4 truck showed a speed sensor code after I got it running. The speedometer cable was broke, and after replacing the cable the code has not returned in 300 miles.

I don't have to pull my whole dash apart do I? Just enough to get my cluster out, right?

just take off enough dash fascia/panels to get at the cluster, If your truck is a 94 you should have plug and play cluster, no cable, look under truck on the drive train, do you have a cable screw into drive train assembly on it or a sensor with a wire? out wheeling maybe you knocked/tore wire off, make sure before you buy a cable...Have fun...

Where wold I look to find out if I have a cable, or the sensor/wire version?

I'll put it this way, the cable going to the transmission/transfercase if it's a cable driven speedo would be big around hard rubber coated with a screw on connector, a wire plug and play would be small wire maybe in a hard plastic shield that is easily bendable but protective, you ever had a bike with a speedometer or a motorcycle or quad, look at there speedo cables much different that a wire going to drive train. crawling under real checking for a cable is easier than taking dash apart, look for a broken wire. I am reading on this thread and getting lots of good information. Thanks for all the advice and pictures.
I am wondering on my automatic how I check to make sure it is a speedometer cable thats making the noise ? Can you disconnect it at the automatic transmission with out oil going all over ?

I got mine at NAPA 2 years ago and still works goo.

After i unhooked both ends I taped the new end to the old cable at the tcase and pulled it through to the top side where I could grab it

I have a similar problem but mine jumps around a bit. I read that they get dry and I bet yours broke. hopefully I can lube mine up before it breaks and I have to replace it. But the question is...where and how do you lube it?
