Hey all!

So, I did a "Starter Replacement Kit" on my starter today (thanks for the great write-ups). After I had installed the new part and put it all back together, I put it back under the wheel well and started to connect the wires back up. When I connected the wire (that faces the engine when installed) the plastic housing broke off the starter! It has copper running through it and is soldered on the inside of the starter, as shown in the pictures.

My question is obviously how can this be fixed? The plastic seems to be in there really well, and my only guess is to remove the solder from the connection and tap it out.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

well first off...it looks like ur starter has been submerged and rusted all to hell LOL..might as well just get a new one dude..

i doubt that plug is able to be replaced lol..although you could AFRO ENGINEER IT!

I think I'd drill a small hole next to the original piece and run a wire through it. Soldier it to the terminal inside and use RTV to seal the hole to prevent corrosion. You could use a waterproof male/female connector to join the wire from the starter to the wire harness.

Hey bugs, do you think there is a generic connector that would match the one that I currently have? I'm not really wanting to cut any wires (because there's basically no room to work!) If I could get the female connector like the one that broke off, and hook the wire to it, then it would definitely work.

You can get a new Denso starter from www.partstrain.com for 75.00 dollars, plus shipping. I have one on my 4Runner and ive never had any problems with it. Then save the new parts that you put into your old starter for spare parts.

You should be able to do that. I can't remember if the wire harness connector is male or female, but in either case you can get a spade connector of the correct type from an auto parts store or Radio Shack, and connect it to the wire you put in the starter. It should plug into the connector in the wire harness.

Thats the relay wire and its only energised when the key is in the start position.

If possible you could put a small ring terminal on the wire inside the starter (soldering would be easier than crimping in such a tight area) and hook it to a insulated banana post (aren't they all insulated?). Then on the outside put another ring terminal on the wire and screw her down.

Go get a used starter in better condition and do the same cheap rebuild.

I got a used starter for $25 and contacts for $5. Even cleaned and painted it to look like a new one..
