Ok its an 87 4runner all factory with 33"s. I just got back from a local spot where I tried to help a guy out of a nice deep mud hole. I was in reverse in 4 wheel and gave it a tug or two and it knocked out of gear and now no 4x4. It doesn't make any wierd noises. I'm a newbie to 4x4 and don't know where to start. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Can you not get the shifter into 4wd? Or can you get it in, but nothing happens?

It will shift in and out fine it just does not engage.

OKay, so it s in and out fine but nothing happens. No "click" and the 4wd light does NOT come on.

okay, have you jacked up the front end to see if you are getting power to the front end? Check out the ADD system, perhaps you knocked something loose..

Light does come on and the front is not getting power. I was in some mud and only rears would spin.

Okay, Find out if you are getting power to the driveshaft. If so, then there is something wrong with the front diff. If not, something is up in the t-case.

take off your skid plate and check out the vacuum lines, one could have come off or broke somewhere. take a look through the links at the top of the page for the factory service manuals, lots of info there.

let us know what you find.

So put it in 4x4 and drive forward, if front axle moves then its the front diff,,no movement then its the t-case?

Put the truck in the air for this. Jack up rear end, put on stands, then get the front end off the ground. Start the truck, put it in 4wd and let it idle in 1st. See if the front driveshaft is turning or not. If it is then there is something wrong with the front diff, like leebee mentioned, the vacuum lines might have come off (there are two). If your driveshaft does not turn then there is something wrong in the transfer case.

OK, truck is in the air. In 4wheel the shaft coming from the t-case spins. The driver side axle spins but the pass. side does nothing. Front tires were not spinning. The 4WD light comes on like it should,shift in and out fine. Truck does not have ADD. So what do you think.

yes both hubs were locked.

Does the drivers side axle appear to spin twice as fast as one of the rear axle? If I had to make a guess right now, I'd say that your drivers side hub has an issue. You could carefully grab the axle with a rag and/ or leather gloves and slow it down a bit. That should cause power to go to the passengers wheel. If so, that just means your drivers side hub is unlocked, stuck or busted.

If your hubs are locked, and the axle spins then the drivers side tire should spin as well.

If one of the hubs is bad would that make both sides loss power to the ground?

It sounds like your hubs need to be rebuilt.

Since you have an open diff the power will go to the wheel that has the least resistance. If your hub is not enguaging properly it will act like its unlocked, this sending the power there since it has nothing to turn.

Do what Matt suggested, let the truck idle in 4low (to keep things slow) and grab the cv shaft, this should transfer power to the other side.

I would pull the hubs off and rebuild both of them. Very easy! Just need some gaskets (stealer) and some grease.
