How do I tell what size rear brake shoes I need for an '89 toyota pickup ext cab w a 22re, AT and 360K on the odometer? I've already thrown away the old shoes after beating on the drums w/ 10# sledge hammer. Pulling the truck wouldn't break them free after they sat since last January. When I looked at Rock Auto and called Azone I was informed there were two (2) sizes and hardware kits. Just replaced an axle, front wheel bearings/races and the ball joints trying to get it ready for winter. Thanks

theres a toyota site you can go to and find replacement parts using vin # the link is somewhere on here not sure what thread. its something like toyoid or toyodi im pretty sure its one of them it helped me find specs on bearings. it also pulls up all the specs on your truck when you use vin # very good site.

But I can answer your question better anyways. As far as the 2 different sizes and which size you want.

The shoes are the same length and thickness, it's only the width that's slightly different. The ones that are slightly wider are usually found on 4Runners. But they'll work on a PU axle too. They'll even fit fine in the same sized brake drums(since they're all the same size).

Which brings me to my main point. The shoes you need are the ones that are the same width as the ones that were on there. Or, if have the skinnier shoes but you want to run the wider shoes(like I do on my PU), you'll need to get the drums turned or replaced. Then you can install and properly break-in the new wider shoes. You could also run the skinnier shoes if you originally had the wider ones without messing with the drums(but why?).

So go bust out your ruler and measure the width of the wear on the drums. Then you'll know which width they were.
