brake lock up when engaging 4wd
recently had a fender bender that bent the back axles on both side. Insurance replace them and found nothing else wrong. Haven't 4wd for a while and tried to put into gear today. Fortunately I was sitting on the side of the road when I put it into 4wd. Tried to take off and suddenly found the rear end brakes locking up as I tried to go. Backed up slowly and then tried again. Again it locked up. Took is out of 4wd and every thing acts normal.
Anybody out there have any ideas?

its not locking up the breaks, the rear axle they replaced the bent one with has the wrong gears in it. your getting drive train bind. try putting the truck on a lift and seeing if the wheels will turn in 4wd. other wise check to see if your e-brake line somehow got mixed in with the transfer case linkage.

if the rear tires are dragging and not pushing it means the rear axle has lower gears then the front.. have them replace the front if you can.. lower gears on their dime..

When checking on the lift, mark the front and rear tires with a grease pen and see if they are rotating at the same speed. (as others have said they probably won't be).

sorry to bring this back, but mine is also doing the same thing. so pretty much all i have to do is replace the front axles with the correct gears? how do you know if you've bought the correct set?
