Been watchin you guys for a while now and learned a lot of good stuff but I finally found a reason to post.

Now that summer is here its time to get to work on the runner which means the 3" BL has to go. Im not sure what brand it is as the PO put it on but I found the "4crawler" instructions so souldnt be any problems. My only concern is i get a lot of heat comin up the shifter from underneath which is wierd since there is 3" extra under there. It hasnt been a problem cause the knob stays cool but the shaft is scalding hot along with the tc shifter. Im worried if I take the lift off the heat will start meltin plastics as there is evidence of that already.
And I have no idea why it would get that hot in the first place. The only things i could think of would be the lift created some kind of draft, an exhaust leak could be contributing, or there is some stock peice im missing cause the PO did a lot of wierd things to this rig.
Anyways im wonderin if anybody has any ideas or can speculate.

Get under there and see if you could fashion a shield of some sorts. Maybe a smaller space wold create a venturi effect and speed up the flow of air.

i would check fluids on both the tranny and t case cause it shouldnt be that hot

just did tranny fluid a month ago and topped of tc fluid
Did a little more searching and found this happens to a few people but its definitly not normal
Now im thinkin my tranny is on its way out as it already will pop out of 1st and 3rd (only 122k on entire truck) if I apply enough torque and dont hold in the shifter
Additionally i guess there is a metal piece under the shift boot which I dont see AND Im not running an EGR which means the engine prolly runs hotter
Either theyre all contributing factors or I suspect the heat shield/tranny are to blame

swap your tranny before you drop the body lift... much easier to get to the bolts.

I have a 2" BL and dont have this issue, my shifter shafts are the same temps they were without the BL. I do get excess heat into the cab though due to me not properly fitting the boot on.

just curious- why get rid of the body lift at all? I had a 95 at one time and to me that is one of the better ways to lift a 2nd gen...

just asking, it's your truck... do what you like....

somethings wrong with the transmission, shouldnt get that hot. I'd check your fluid levels again, the tranny and tcase fluids are interconnected

Im no expert but I think maybe its not as hot as you might think it is. Did a Body lift on a 89 toyota back in 91 with my stepdad and he thought he knew what he was doing. Got the same indentical thing you are talking about. The heat coming up through that gap between the two shifters. cant stand that.

Just had a 3" BL done by Twisted Metal Offroad in Tampa and I dont have any gaps, holes or any heat what so ever coming from there.
You should take it to a 4x4 Pro.

im just not a fan of body lifts and i always thought 3" was too much anyways
Ive now noticed the TC shifter gets hot before the tarnny one and stays hotter
I also read maybe switch to full synthetic might help
Whatever the problem is I guess Ill leave the body lift on there till I figure it out
I dont have any of the stock parts to put back on there anyways

Sorry for a mini hijack, but since your all on the topic of body lifts, i had a quick question. I just ordered a 2" body lift for my 88 pickup. Will i need to extend the brake lines or anything out of the ordinary that a kit wouldnt come with?

Wish i could off you some advice on the transmission heat.

Perhaps when they removed the shifter to do the extension they screwed up the insulation? There is a bunch of insulation and foam around the shifters. I had to hack mine up when I installed my dual cases and I get heat up there now that I didn't used to have.
