It's not the switch, its the resistor.

I would have said switch, I have the same truck same problem and it was a bad switch. Then again, I did observe smoke pour out of the dash when it first broke and when I took it out, it was all black

a) Switch, OR
b) Resistor module, OR
c) Something in between.
All can be tested with a simple continuity/resistance check before spending money and time on replacement. If one replaces it with used parts, he should still test replacement parts. If money is no object, one can simply replace everything with brand-new parts, but he would miss the learning experience and the reassurance of knowing exactly what went wrong. I believe one reason we chose our classic trucks is because we want to understand exactly what goes on with them. Otherwise, we'd just buy brand-new, sophisticated (=complicated) modles and rely on the stealers =D
