blinking od lite/wont engage 4th.

im a total tranny moron so i appreciate any advice forthcoming..

this rig i just got[91,3.0,auto,sr5,31-10.50-15--4.56] will constantly flash the overdrive off indicator when i turn overdrive on...
i also dont believe it is hitting 4th[od] because when cruising at 65 or so my rpms are at around 2400 .
this is a normal rpm for my last vehicle[vw oldie] so it fooled me at first into thinking overdrive was working and that the lite flashing was just a quirk or mistake. I understand tho that the motor should be @ around 1100 to 1400 rpm @ that speed ,right?[hence the horrible gas milage we been gettin with a daily 60 mile round trip commute the last few weeks.
i am just digging into this prob. and am looking around for answers but if anyone has a checklist for me or thoughts then i am obliged.

act like you're pulling the trouble codes and look at the O/D light. it could blink codes at you too.
well, I don't mean 'act' like it... do it.

Toyota's won't shift into OD if they're too cold. Is your temperature comming up properly?

ya i am aware of the temp. process and feel that is not it considering a wide range of activity and the lite is a constant...

i believe the lite being on is obviously the first step by the designers to tell me the od is out..[idiot lite..so apt in this case]
my hope is to check the mechanical side of things outside the tranny as i wont be digging around inside it!
i am gonna check the obvious and maybe someone can have an idea or two..

abe: i just picked up this rig and havnt got the scanner yet[sears has good deals i noticed].....have to get it soon...any ideas in the realm of "obvious'?

these trucks are OBD1 and do not take a scanner to diagnose problems.

I cant remember how to diagnose what the problem with the transmission is, but if you go to the online FSM it will tell you teh procedures.

EDIT - follwo this link...http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...31diagnosi.pdf

hmm thats odd, toyota didnt start OBD II til 95.5

The A340H Auto tranny is a very finiky (sp?) transmission. I got tired of dealing with the bull crap mine was giving me and pulled it out and put an R150F 5 Speed in its place.

Probably one of best 700 dollars i have ever spent in my life.

hey no problem man, thats what this great forum is here for

hmmm..kk thats an interesting read..im gonna go do some fiddlin an see what i get..
im sure i got the data confused myself about the obd when i was "shoppin "cuz i was lookin for anything from 85-2000 and i doubt someone who knows these would make the mistake, but uh.....actually im comin from classic vw busses and bugs and stuff so not much exp with that system at all,i really like it tho, very handy[not sure about those 300 dollar scanners at sears tho ,for the next version],course if you wanna work on your own at all eh?.

you really swear by that swap eh?..ill keep it in mind but first im gonna luv this one up and see if it has a change of attitude..

If the OD light is blinking, you have a stored code. The codes are for electrical problems, not mechanical. The tranny brain ECT is under the radio, at the front of the console. These are the codes for the OD light.

To get it to blink the code, I know on my '86, there's a square plug on the driver side fender.

you ground that plug, switch the ignition to on, (don't start) and count.

If I remember correctly, on the later trucks, you insert the Office Max Scanner Tool: a paperclip, in the TE1 and E1 terminals in the diagnostic plug just behind the battery, turn the ignition on (without starting the truck) and turn the O/D on. the check engine and O/D lights should begin blinking codes.

So, you use the same procedure to check EFI codes as you do transmission codes? Jumping terminals T and E1?

Does the CEL and the O/D light blink at the same time?

If there are not any transmission codes, does the O/D light just stay on without blinking, or will it blink consistently like the CEL does when there are no codes?

I have an 88 with the 3VZE. I'm trying to diagnose an O/D issue, but my O/D light doesn't blink when jumping the sane T and E1 terminals.

Hi there, I'm also having similar problems to the OP. I have an '87 runner with auto transmission. The 3rd gear started going out and now it does not go into 3rd at all. Goes from 2nd to overdrive. The OD light blinks when driving but I cannot get it to blink for diagnostics. I tried to ground the following plug and turned the ignition without starting the engine as the FSM describes but the OD light just stays off.

I've also tried the T-E terminals but that does not turn the OD light on either - just makes the check engine light flash (which BTW shows no codes). Am I doing something wrong? Could someone highlight which pin connection I am supposed to short? The FSM says "DG terminal" but its not clear where that is. The picture above is the only thing i could find.

If that is the correct pin, anyone know why the OD light wont flash with the engine off but ignition on?

Quick Reply: blinking od lite/wont engage 4th.
