Post !!!Bet you can't figure this one out!!!

HAS ANYONE SEEN A 4-PIN DISTRIBUTER?!?! 1990 3.0 V6. I've seen all the ones you guys speak of (G-, G1, G2....) something like that, and they are arranged in a square shaped plug. The distributer i got at the junkyard (also a 1990 3.0 V6) has that pattern. The haynes book shows a 4-pin in a square pattern also. The one on my truck has a 4-pin in a FLAT configuration. No conversion harness on my engine wiring harness, so it must be stock. The coil and igniter pack i also got off the same 1990 match my igniter pack and coil. I would like to swap out pickup coils (no spark) so i don't know how to match the wires because the wires are different colors....

I know the plug-in on my 91 22re is a 2 wire flat style, and for some reason just about all the other's I've seen have a round style plug...

but I dunno, I have absolutely no knowledge on the 3.0's, other than they love to eat head-gaskets like a fat kit loves to eat cake

maybe it's a Cali and Fed emmissions thing?

oh, and btw, don't double post...

i tried to press back or something and i think it posted, and then brought me back to the message screen. Sorry, it wasn't intentional. Do you know where i could get a wiring diagram? Haynes sucks, and i'm a haynes guy. I might try sneeking into the local toyota dealership and lookin at ther FSM's....

I hate Haynes, yet for some reason I've bough one for every vehicle I've ever owned

Have you taken at look through the FSM sticky?

Been there

My son's '93 3.0 4runner lost spark 3 months ago. It has the 4 pin flat connector on the dist. as well. That is the stock connector also. I ohmed my distributor and coil, both checked within spec. using a haynes manual & also comparing the specs to an '88 factory Toyota manual which was identical. I tried replacing the distributor (cheaply) with one from a salvage yard. Still no spark. I was able to exchange that dist. for a coil & igniter combo, still no spark. The manuals state that if everything checks o.k to replace the ECM. I ended up taking it to a Toyota dlr to get it diagnosed. They came up with the same diag. a bad ECM. I failed to notice while checking for spark that the check engine light was not lit up when the key was on. I was given the option of finding a replacement ECM from outside sources.(Dlr price on new was $1300) I found a replacement with a lifetime warranty at GoECM.com for $265.00 plus a $50.00 refundable core charge upon return of the defective one.

Kind of long winded but hope this helps!

WOW, for some reason, when trouble shooting electronics... ECM never comes to mind. MY check engine light doesn't come on.... I'm hoping the light isn't coming on and it's not the bulb burnt out. Any way to check either bulb or ECM?!?

ECM swap has to be with the same style. They are marked by a sticker on the outside. If you have a 4wd/auto trans you can not use a 4wd/manual ECM or a 2wd ECM. The ECM controls the shift points(auto trans.) and Ignition timing so to avoid creating other problems find a donor to test with. It has easy access on the passenger kickpanel. As for the bulb I don't know of a way to "jump" test it to light it up, only removal to look at it which takes a while to access it.

Someone did swap the auto to a manual before i bought it... now is the dist timing going to be wrong for the manual? sorry for the off topic. I'm going to check the CEL bulb tomorrow....today? lol. ECM just has to have the same sticker/number on it... ....correct?

I'm not sure if it will affect the dist timing, I know I had to have the 3vz 4x4 A/T sticker on it since the ECM controls the shift points of an auto trans. Did your truck/4runner run fine before. My sons gave no warning, one day it was fine the next it would crank all day but wouldn't start. I checked plugs, wires, dist cap & rotor & found no spark. I'm a M/C mech. for a living and testing components wasn't a problem. Honestly I think since you have a manual you should get a manual programmed ECM to avoid problems.

To make the auto ECM work with the 5sp you just have to jump two wires. Thats it. Many guys have done it and they are enjoying their manual truck!

Heres a few things to check as per my 1990 FSM:

No check engine light when ign switch on:

Does chck engine light come on when ECU terminal W is grounded to the body (yes = check wiring between ECU terminal E1 and body ground, if its okay, try another ECU)

If still not, check the bulb, fuse and wiring between ECU and ignition switch.

So the e1 terminal ground goes to the "EC" ground behind the passenger (right hand) cylinder head cover. I checked it with a continuity device, even manually connected e1 terminal to ground but to no avail. So now to disassemble the glove compartment to check ecu connections and tap on the box.

Which connector is the battery power to the ecu/ecm? which is it anyways... ecu ecm? The FSM shows the connections, but doesn't show the pin layout. I wanted to just see if there was power to it?

Curious. THe 94 FSM that I have has the pin layout on the ECM (ECU, if you prefer) connectors. Or, you can find it here:

http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...emci/eng3r.pdf

Look at E6, E7, and E8.
