Hello, I'm trying to source either a rebuilt or new 22re for my 1988 4runner which will become my daily driver. No shop locally has anything to offer, so I've been looking at ordering something online. I'm not looking for a performance engine like an LC, just a good running 22re that I can install and forget about. I am tempted to order from Japanengine.com, but haven't heard anything about them. Have you checked into Jasper engines as well? I know nothing about them, but just thought I'd throw out another source to look into

I agree though, if it's not too much of a struggle, why don't you repair and rebuild? These things last forever as you know.

if you have a couple of hours, check out THOOK's rebuild on his 22re. of course there are no pictures, you know, i think the boy is a chinese spy just gathering info on us. who does a rebuild thread and not post pics. hmmmmm i have heard some pretty good things about jasper. i think rebuilding your own would be cheaper

check out johns forien engines he is good with toyotas and offers long blocks and short blocks, i prfer to build my own, parts are cheap and its a pretty easy engine to rebuild, i have built 7 so far.

AFAIK, you cannot get a "new" engine from toyota. If you could, that would be the only place the has a truly new engine with all new parts.

As for remans, many places are better than others. YOu get what you pay for, but almost all remans use the cheapest parts possible, no matter what their marketing may lead you to believe.

DONT go for the Jap crate engines. They are nothing but trouble, and not even legal for street use (see: Fine Print). Top that off with most of them being 21-RU engines (1.9L) and you are asking for problems.

Have you tried to source one through a local wrecking yard?

Well I'm not sure about where you live Cougar but 22re's are becoming a little harder to get at junkyard here in Colorado (atleast the ones that aren't shady). I'm actually on a waiting list from one of the good Toyota only yards here and it sounds like I'll be waiting a good month or two as I'm behind a few people. From what the guy told me he usually gets older Toys without engines as they are bought totalled and the guts are usually removed before he receives them.

Thanks for all the help. I was a little skeptical about the "new" engines I've been seeing on e-bay and such, that's why I asked. As for rebuilding my current engine, I'm pretty sure the PO spun a rod bearing and then continued driving and eventually threw the rod. The engine won't hold oil or coolant, what coolant is in there is milky, and after I start the runner, which takes a considerable amount of gas pedal pumping, there is a horrible knock, and the engine can't idle on its own, I have to feed it lots of gas. Also, after running the engine for a few minutes there is a pool of milky oil on the ground, mostly on the drivers side. Any ideas?
