My '87 pickup just started squealing really badly when i push the clutch in. It doesnt matter what gear im in. When i push it in it squeals very loudly and something seems to spool up.. (kind of sounds like a fan) and the battery meter drops way down. Everything goes back to normal when i let off the clutch. It has 200,000 miles with the original clutch in it and i just ordered a new clutch kit for it being how it could use it. But Why is it doing this squealing??? and What's with the electrical aspect of it? A fan? Why?

o and your battery gauge seems awful high should be right around the middle

That sounds and looks like your starter is engaging wben the clutch is pushed, but I don't know why the apparent electrical load. That volt gauge is reading high, too. Do any wiring lately?

Agreed, start up the truck, pull the signal wire off the starter and see if it does it again.

Yeah, i put a couple off road lights on the bumper but that's all. I believe it was that high before i installed them also. And after i parked it i drove it again and the problem went away. Weird. Well i'm doing the clutch this week so that'll eliminate that whole problem, and most likely this whole problem all together. But the electrical part of it is what really was confusing me..

get a multi meter and check the voltage at the battery running should be around 14.5v anything higher is bad.. id clean all the battery contacts also there should be atleast 2 grounds one to the fender and one to the block

That sounds like the it's trying to engage the starter on it's own. Keep in mind there's an interlock that prevents the starter from operating when the clutch is released. The clutch interlock seems to be operating the starter for some reason. You might have a problem with the wiring harness.

my guess would be a bad ignition switch. it's likely stuck in the crank position, but only sends voltage to the starter with the clutch down. try turning the key to the on position with the engine off and pressing the clutch in and see if the truck starts on its own.

Mine did this for about 5 minutes shortly after I installed a new clutch. The throwout bearing ended up grenading on me. Not sure why it made the starter engage.....weird!

could be the flywheel bending when you push in the clutch and touching the starter gear. Thats why the voltage changes.

Might want to get a new flywheel and check the thickness of it.
