axle housing destroyed???
a couple months ago, i got a 87 4runner with a rear driver side wheel cylinder needing replaced. on my way home from picking it up, the bearing on the driver side rear exploded, and it looks like the axle may have destroyed the housing in the process. i took off the passenger side to try and compare, and it looks like i may still be able to get it to work. i can't seem to find any detailed pictures of what is replaceable and what is the actual housing. it looks to me that maybe the axle seal mating surface is probably screwed though. tomorrow i am supposed to pick up a new replacement axle just for that side, but i don't want to waste my money if the housing is destroyed too. any input is appreciated.
i have a copy of the repair manual for this year, but the drawings aren't helping me much.

the cheapest full axle housing i could find around here is around $200-$400, which is not anywhere near my current budget. i found the axle alone for $50 which is a steal compared to what i have been finding. even still that would be a waste of time if the housing is beyond repair though.

i figure i might as well throw up a pic of what the beast looks like. pretty rough, with some good rust spots here and there. 33's with no lift that i know of. i built front and rear bumpers recently, but haven't had a chance to paint them, so no pics yet.

ew, looks like that thing got HOT, by seeing the discoloration!
but yeah I'd say just put a small bead of permatex around the inside of the housing, and then tap the new seal in, and you should be goo to go
man... and I thought MY bearings were bad, lol
but in all reality, you're luck you cought it when you did... if left unfixed, the axle shaft along with the outter hub portion and tire will come right out while you're driving on the road!
