Auxiliary Gas Tank Group Buy

I reached out to Sunset Metal Fab who purchased Northwest Metal Products' auxiliary tank portion of their business. NWMP also made the Downey Auxiliary Tanks...

Regardless, they make the following tanks for Pickups:
TPA-1: 79-88 all models Pickup 13.5 Gal
TPA-2: 89-90 all models Pickup 13.5 Gal
TPA-6: 91-95 Pickup all models 13.5 Gal

And these are for 4Runners:
TPA-3: 84-89 4 Runner w/o Coil Suspension 14 Gal
TPA-4: 90-95 4Runner w/ spare beneath w/ rear coil 11.5 Gal
TPA-5: 90-95 4Runner w/ spare on tailgate 20 Gal

*All of these except for TPA-5 allow your spare to stay in the stock location. But the tire brackets would have to be removed to install the tank. Otherwise, installation is fairly easy from what I've read previously...

I particularly inquired about my Truck, the TPA-6 and was told price would be $838 plus shipping and this would be a build to order taking 2-3 weeks.
If 5 or more were ordered, the price would drop to $699 plus shipping.
*I did request these prices about 6 months ago, and it wasn't in the budget for me at the time, so have held. Might have slightly changed, but should be ballpark accurate.

So wondering if anyone would like to do a group buy here for TPA-6. Would imagine we could probably all just send payment directly to the vendor, but specifics can be worked out later...

Regardless, I'm looking to pull the trigger by end of March or so now that lower gas prices are freeing up some of my fuel budget. Fine to push towards April too if that'd help anyone w/ tax return $...

And if anyone else is curious about the other models, I'm happy to request quotes on those as well.

Bottom line, if we can save ~$150 through a GB, that'd be awesome.

Please reply if interested in doing a group buy and which Tank you'd be interested in. Thanks!

*And I don't know how much variance there is between tanks, so if it's just bolt hole location but dimensions are the same we might be able to qualify group buy w/ 5 similar but not exact models... I was quoted GB prices for the same model @ 5 quantity minimum though...

Should also mention, that NWMP offered the following remove and replace tank options as well, all listed as pickups:
80-83 short wheel base (22 gal) - TPR4
80-85 long wheel base (26 gal) - TPR5
84-85 short wheel base and/or xtra cab (25 gal) - TPR6
85-87 long wheel base and/or turbo (26 gal) - TPR7

I am looking to replace the aux tank that was sold to me along with my 4runner, it has some rust in it.

I guess I would be in for a TPA-3. Maybe it is super similar to the 5, since it is 14gal vs 13.5gal?

Thanks for posting this

You bet. Please feel free to share on other yota boards as well.
But I'd like to try and keep this group buy exclusively here though -- makes it a lot easier to wrangle all the moving pieces... So if folks can signup and post their interest here, that'd be great.

I would be very interested a TPA 4 or 5, preferably a TPA 5.

How do these fill? Is there a second fill tube and a switch to change fuel pumps?

Was wondering if this is the same as the nw tank. I noticed the filler on the 4runner came out of the rear wheel well. kinda makes me nervous. Anybody ever use one. Thoughts?

That's how the one I got from the PO is, I bet it's the same tank.

And well, it had developed a rust problem so they took it off the truck

It connects to your current tank through its drain plug. Some have fabbed an electric pump between the two to remove the gravity feed. Like here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123...ansfer-218625/

Here are some other install reads: http://www.oocities.org/baja/3499/gt.html

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...uel-tanks.html

Yes, filler neck is in wheel well, but I suppose you could re-route it and cut/install a fuel door in your body depending on your needs...

Also, these tanks are CARB or EPA or whatever compliant -- they connect into your fuel vapor system to prevent fuel vapors from escaping and ensuring tanks remain pressurized.

Gravity feed is a one-way valve however.

I might be interested in a TPA-5 if there were enough people to bring the price down.

BTT. Need 5 (was told of each) to get a group buy rate.

TPA5 -- I believe that one connects to your stock fuel location and you remove your spare and stock tank. Sorry about earlier confusion... Was addressing the auxillary tanks, not replacement.

The TPA-6 was the only I was quoted on price and would assume more gallons=more material=more cost...

TPA-3: jennygirl
TPA-5: nortonian, odonekanobe
TPA-6: RSR, Dingotech

We're at 5 total folks, but if we can get to 5 of any one tank, they would probably be more willing to then offer a discount all of them...

Re: the TPA-5 as a replacement for the stock tank,

When I researched this previously I saw a company in Australia that made two different auxiliary tanks for the 3VZE, one was a smaller one that allowed you to keep the spare and the other was larger but required you to ditch the spare. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this was the same.

I would be surprised to see a replacement for the stock tank that required you to get rid of the spare though. I can't visualize how that would fit.

I've never looked at the 90-95 pickup. How much difference could there be between the space for the auxiliary tanks? Could one be used on both pickups and 4 runners?

There are 2 tanks. TPR5 and TPA5. You were talking about A, I was talking about R.

The book photo for the TPA 5 says 90-95 4 Runner Auxillary Tank w/ Tire on Tailgate and 20 gallon tank. So likely not hole for spare tire carrier and you'd keep your stock tank.
TPR5 is a replacement tank for stock...
Unfortunately, it's just a spreadsheet type listing w/ no pictures.

Looking further at the book and thinking through. The TPA4 (4Runner 11.5 gal) and TPA6 (Pickup 13.5 gallon), both with tire remaining, appears to be difference between 4 runner body height and pickup bed height -- the 4 runner being lower. So for same distance to ground, the 4 runner tank had to be made less thick. So it's possible and likely with spacers that you could install the pickup tank in the 4 runner, I just don't know if it would still gravity feed. And your spare would sit a little lower as well... But if it's just the side panels that are slightly different widths, that might also make a compelling case for incorporating both into the same group buy.

Also related to spacers, that's what I think I'm going to do on my stock tank shield rather than beating on it... Shouldn't be more than 1" space and would prevent that section punched out in following link from still absorbing most of the force of any impact... http://www.geocities.ws/bajaguru/gt.html

I've got a 2.5 inch OME lift that might make up the difference between a TPA4 and a TPA6.

Also, just because it allows you to mount the spare there doesn't mean you have to do it. The gravity feed would be the only issue I see.

I have a feeling the dimensional issues are up towards the bed/body, not down from the brackets... So a body lift is likely what you'd need to make up the space between the frame it bolts onto and the body it would interfere with. (If I'm not mistaken, OME is just a suspension lift kit...)

I'm still interested in a TPA-5 as long as it's an auxillary tank in addition to the stock, not a replacement for the stock. I think you cleared that up a few posts up but just wanted to make sure.

Thanks.

Wish I would have seen this thread earlier. This is great info! We'd reached out to Sunset Metal Fab twice and never received a response.

We were looking at the TPA-1, but didn't even know they offered the 25 gal replacement tank for 84-85 Xtracabs. Anyone still interested?
