Unhappy automatic transmition condition. HELP

so i recently rebuilt my 1986 4runner's automatic transmition (A340F). everything works except it doesn't want to go into 4L (think it's just adjustments) anyways i filled it up with 9 quarts and then stopped for the night to research more to make sure im not going over.

the next day i come and filled it up to 11 1/2 to 12 quarts or so. i got it to where it should be on the dip stick and thats when i took it out for a test run and found the problem with 4L (L gear works though). but the next morning i came to the shop and about 1-2 quarts of fluid were on the floor. im tired of working on this and not having it running.

im thinking that the torque converter drained into the trans/t-case and it came out of the breather tube on top of the t-case. my transmition is weird and it shares the fluid with the t-case. me and my friend have been looking around online and can't seem to find any set truths on the matter. another one of my friends said that we need to pre-fill the torque converter.
if you can help me that's be great

well having no 4l has nothing to do with th tourqe converter and if i remember right 4l is engaged electronically so u may have missed plugging something in. and for the fluid leak it could be almost anything such as a line, gasket, anything

well i know it's not the oil lines to the radiator because it's leaking from the back half of the transmiton. and the plugs and stuff are good because it would have leaked the night before.
