automatic transmission issues

just got a 88 4runner with the v6, auto, and 4x4. i bought it knowing that something was wrong with the transmission. i just wanted to get some insight from you. what happens is, when you start it up and put it in gear and eather it goes or it dose nothing. there is a wining kinda noise that you can hear, that sounds like its coming from the tranny area. if nothing happens you can turn it off and restart it and eventualy it will work. but you cant get far. i was getting about a mile and would have to turn it off and try again. the guy that i got it from said that he did a tranny flush, but didn't help, tried unplugging the tranny computer and driving, but that didn't change anything. he said that it might be the trannys pump gears might be worn and not building up pressure? also i have another 88 4runner but its the 4 cylinder version, can that manual tranny be swapped into my v6?

No.... the 4cyl has a different manual trans then the V6

G or W56 vs. R150F

I would check the adjustment of the shifting mechanism.

Does it work if you shift it manually.

Start off in low and work your way up.

Torque converter blown out? Is the engine lugging against the tranny at all?

I'd ditch that auto for a manual out of any 88 to 95 v6 truck or 4 runner. I have already picked up 2 r150's for free. They are a dime a dozen and nobody wants them once the frames rust out around here. but for some reason if u can find an auto that works everyone wants around $1,000 for it. I got rid of 2 working autos just because I hate the power/fuel economy issues, all the electrical issues, harder to take in and out with all the linkages&lines, harder to diagnose and work on, and not to mention the control/and what do u do if they spring a leak on the trail. If u have to pull that transmission it's easier and probably cheaper to do the conversion and 3/4 of the work is already done just pulling the auto out. oh and check this out http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/cto/1498656335.html Includes everything u need to do the swap for $300. assuming it's a v-6 because of a head gasket issue
