Auto trans questions

Heres the problem, Sometimes my 92 runner wont shift into second gear it acts like its in neutral cold, hot it doesnt matter. I would say the second gear band needs to be replaced but 60 percent of the time it shifts just fine. Yesterday it started randomly hunting for gears at 55mph 3rd to 4th convertor locking and unlocking. Weird. Do you guys think it maeby the soleniods are sticky? Is there a computer glitch? A vaccum problem? How do i tell for sure? Also my speedo quit working not sure if thats related.1992 4runner 3.0 auto 4wheel drive.
Thanks

There are 3 solenoids. 1 and 2 shift and torque converter lock. 1 & 2 work in on and off sequences together. If they fail mechanically, you will not get a code.
