Auto tranny issue only when heeling!

the oil temp light comes on, so far its when in 4 hi and 4x4 semi slow. It happened once when going up to the top of bogus basin on the road, slow and winding curves 2wd.
I climbe hard today to the nw side of the state on the frwy long hard incline several miles long 55mph tops even geared like I am an no light but if I go off road, slow and in 4x4 it comes on.

It didnt do it before last weekend when I got stalled in 4hi on a hill and I was on the gas but the truck was completely stopped so I got off the throttle and went to 4 lo. I did the light thing shortly after that. If I stop it goes away sometimes for good and other it comes back on.

The ATF is brownish and smell burnt (prob. hasnt been changed ever) Im putting amsoil in it tomorrow with a complete flush. Should I put an auxilary cooler on it?

It seems to shift fine, when down shifting it has a section of power before it slows a bit like it always had.

Don't do a pressure wash at a store. Just let the pump pump out the old fluid...

You probibly need an aux cooler. I guess the tranny fluid is not getting cooled by the air like on the hwy so it heats up..

if the temp is high, then obviously something is amiss. brown/burnt fluid needs flushed out pronto and will contribute to the problem if not replaced.
Personally, I'd flush and use normal dexron II/III dex/merc fluids first, skipping the synth. If changing the fluids out doesn't help the problem an external cooler will likely not help much other than to delay a failure. Which means you've likely burned up some clutches in the auto. Going to a full synth at this point in time may actually make the problem worse.

Yep, once your fluid looks that brown smell and stinks. You have done damage. The crap floating around might be helping the clutches grab. So, if you flush it out and the tranny slips alot.. its time to swap it out!

which is why I suggested the regular fluids instead of the amsoil / synth stuff. Why waste the money on amsoli/synth if you're gong to have to rebuild it... (or alternately... if it works fine with the cheap stuff, but the synth complicates the problem)?
