Auto tranny ?

tomarrow im going to look at a turbo 4runner with a auto tranny, the owner tells me it idels good and revs good but when you put it into drive it bogs down and dies. is there a eazy way to figure out whats wrong without going to a shop?? thanks for reading and i hope to here something back and have a great day

My first guess would be a shift soleinoid problem is causing it to start off in 3rd or 4th gear, or something like that.

Or maybe the torque converter is locked up all the time.

would the torque converter be locked up due to sludge?? or no oil?? and can i over ride the sloeinoid??

I'm not sure. Generally if a solenoid goes bad its just replaced, there is a test proceedure in the FSM.

Can you get it going in 4WD low range and then shift to high range?

IIRC, the shift solenoid is one of the most expensive parts to replace on the auto... upwards of 100 bucks...

i think that if thats the only problem with that truck, get it...

If the torque converter were locked up all the time, the vehicle would stall as some as you came to a stop (or tried to), just like trying to stop with a manual tranny and the clutch engaged.
