thinking about swapping my 4.11 out for 4.88 just so i can use fifth gear again.any negatives to it.Any benefit other than getting fifth back?Would like to move truck a little faster from stoplights,but not sure its worth the cost.Thanks

obviously there is something wrong with your motor if you dont have the power to maintain 5th gear, my carb. needs to be rebuilt and i can still hold 5th gear and im on 31's with 4.10's..

4.88's and 31's is gonna put you at like 4000 rpms at 70mph..when you should be around more like 3000rpms.

if you dont ever plan on going to a larger tire size, then you should go with 4.56 gears..4.88's are geared more towards 33's

just lettin ya know that you would probably destroy your motor if you went and got 4.88's..4.56's is a MUCH better and more economical choice

yea you would have been SCREAMING along at 70mph..lol..

4.56 should make it feel like it has 28" tires on it..LOL brings it back CLOSE to stock feel..

I have a 95 runner that's an auto and it came factory with 4.88's and 31's. Not much of a difference between 4.56 and 4.88.

What do you have pickup, 4Runner, 22re, 3.0?
The more info the better...

By the way, Western PA has a hill or two also...

but Lumpy, the reason you have 4.88's is CUZ of your auto tranny. My '91 3.0 with factory 31's came with 4.56's, and I'm under geared. We need the higher gears in the 3rds, to accomodate the auto's gear ratio's. Toyota went to the 4.88's in the auto's in '92. I'm looking for a descent set of 4.88's to get me back into descent gas milage. Unless I can find me a 5sp....lol.

22RE's seem not to mind continuous high-rpms. I live in a hilly part of the world as well and I've considered this... though I'd be tempted to go to 33x9.5's TA/KOs or 33x10.5 KM2s.

I look at it like this...I'm running 31's with a 5spd and 4.10's she does alright. The bigger hills I go to 4th and once in a while 3rd.

I'm currently running 33's with 4.88's and auto. she does fine little sluggish but that's due to exhaust work and she was really beat on before I got her.

If he has a 22re and 4.10's with his 5spd, as long as he stay's with 31's then go with the 4.56's. If there is any chance of going to 33's then 4.88's would be good.

Freak, if your going to regear go to 5.29's and not waste the $ on 4.88's and just go all the way. My plans are to do the 5spd swap next but I already have my 4.88's. If I had to gear from 4.56's I'd go 5.29's.

4.88's and 31's would put you at 3147 rpms at 70mph

4.56's would bring you close to a stock ratio with the 31's, 4.88's would give you more power from stoplight to spotlight.

i run 4.88s and 31s on a 22re 5spd. no issues here other than the odometer is off. i went from 4.10s to 4.88s with the same tires. i DID notice a fair amt of power increase from this swap, but nothing like "WOW!!". it's most noticeable on hills and inclines. on the hwy, i cruise at 70mph (or 78-ish according to odometer) and my RPMs are right at around 3400 which is not bad at all. i can even get it into 5th gear on a street if i wanted to at like 50mph and have enough power to accelerate. on big steep grades, i no longer have to get down into 3rd, but am ok in 4th.

if your main reason for wanting 4.88s is to be faster off the line, then go buy a fast car, because the yota is NEVER gonna be that fast. i'm sure a Geo Metro would stomp my truck in a race. on a positive note, i do notice it's a tad quicker off the line and easier to chirp the tires if i wanted to, but chirp is pretty much she'll ever do unless there's more horses to back it up.

eventually, i'm gonna scrounge some cash and throw down on some 33s, maybe someday i'll even go up to 35s on this truck and keep the 4.88s - i figure this would feel very similar to my old setup of 4.10s/31s. also, i don't quite know what my gas mileage is now that i've swapped gears. i haven't had the time to sit down and calculate the change, but i'd guess it's pretty much the same as before 15-22mpg depending on how heavy my foot is/type of driving.

Well guys, I'm having almost the same problem.
I have a 90 pickup extcab, 22re 5spd , 2wd, with a swap out diff (i dont know what it is), and 30x9.5x15 tires
What is the right diff for this truck? What would u all think? I was thinking about installing a 4.10 to it. Or should i install something like a 3.?? Any ideas?

yes 4000 was an exaggeration, it should be more like 3500

but it would prolong the life of your motor to be in the lower rpms...so 4.56's are the better choice.

I am running 4.88's and had 31's on last week. It isn't bad on the highway if you don't want to go fast than 70. The truck had plenty of zip.

I am running 4.88's and 31's on my 90 V6 5spd, upgraded from 4.10's and the power is back along with the gas mileage. At 70mph my rpm's are at about 3300.

Hi Tim,

I was in a similar situation with my stock rig several years ago. I had the 4.10's with 31" tires. it was a little sluggish around town, and on starts. I also seemed to notice a bit of trouble holding 5th unless on the flats, really, but this was 70-75mph. factor in a headwind, and I either found myself slowing down, or dropping into 4th.

I was on the fence over 4.56's or 4.88's myself. I wanted more low to mid range torque to improve driveability around town and on acceleration. after looking at some of the gearing calculators, understanding that I had no plans for moving to larger tires, I settled on the 4.56's, which, as the guys say, will bring your gearing back to near stock. I'm pleased with that selection. it is noticeably more responsive. starts from stops are better, highway on-ramp acceleration is better, and it holds 5th at highway speed without too much bother, though it does rev a bit past 3k at 70-75mph. the improvement is not throw-you-back-in-your-seat noticeable, but just more of a subtle improvement in throttle response.

whether you go 4.56 or 4.88 will depend on whether you plan to go to 33's, or on how much highway driving you do, but as noted above, you'll be screamin' at 70-75mph if you go 4.88.
