Anyone knocking from advancing timing?
Just curious to see how far people have advanced before pinging or knocking starts? I'm set at 8*-10* right now and having no problem, running 87 octane on stock compression ratio. Distributor wont go any further to advance it, but I'm thinking of jumping a tooth and resetting the distributor so that I can advance it a little more. I'm thinking 12*-14* as long as I am not knocking, maybe more. This motor spends about 80% of it's life above 4,000 RPM's Anyone have input?
FWIW, the highest octane here in California I can get is 91, and the motor is built 22RE w/ about 7K miles.

Your timing may not be as advanced as you think: the knock sensor will cause the ecu to retard timing as it begins to pick up detonation. Using an advance timing light with no jumper set will show you whether that's happening as you rev the motor.

Timing is being set with Te1-E1 shorted, and idle around 900RPM. Anything lower and motor has rough idle due to cam.

Don't do 2WD? I don't quite understand that?
The cam is meant to run mid-high RPM's. It's lopey at idle, which is why I mentioned it's got a rough idle.

The amount of timing advance you can run depends on your octane rating, and compression. I don't know what has previously been done to the 22RE in my truck, but the compression is 185-190 across all the cylinders. I put my timing at 8 shorted and it pings with 87 octane. Timing at 6 and its fine.
My buddies truck on the other hand. He runs his timing at 10 and has no problems at all with 87 octane, but his compression is 145-150 range.
