Another Head Gasket Repair and solutions

Well, just like everyone else on here
I am attempting a HG replacement on a 1991 4Runner I recently purchashed. I read about every thread I could find about tips and tricks. I was ready with all tools in hand, and all the forum members were right:

1) Cam gears are a PITA! I just removed both cams together with the timing belt cover attached. No reason to remove the cam gears at all. Why has no one posted about that? It seemed logical to me.

2) Had to cut crossover pipe, and will go with custom exhaust work using stock manifolds. I will install "open headers" and have exhaust shop cap the drivers side crossover connection and add a down pipe on passenger side that crosses under tranny and connects to a y-pipe prior to the oxygen sensor.

I will post pics when all is complete. I was pleased to see that the bottom end had been rebuilt and bored over to 0.50 recently. The freshly milled heads with a valve job should mate up nicely.
