another 3vze/cold start/rough idle issue

ive already tried searching but havent been able to find something that directly relates to my problem. i hope some Yota expert can help. my 94 3.0 has an odd idle fluctuation during cold start. after long periods of rest (more than a few hours) it starts right up but cant make up its mind whether it wants to idle high or low. it'll do this till its completely warmed up then runs fine. first thing i wanted to do was change the PCV valve but appears there isnt one and the one i bought which is supposed to fit doesnt? im sure this is something pretty simple but i dont know where to start with this truck.

Check for vacuum leaks first.

There is a PCV. It is in the passenger side valve cover, under the intake plenum, towards the rear of the valve cover. Some say they can swap it out with long pliers without removing the plenum. Most likely you would need a new grommet also, and the only way to do that is to remove the plenum.

As indicated above, check for a vacuum leak. There are various ways to do this, one is to spray something an the vacuum lines, maybe starting fluid, and listen for an idle change. If you hear the idle change when you spray on a particular line, then it is most likely leaking there.

Also, verify the Throttle Position Sensor settings. There are scores of threads on that on here.

Good luck.

3vze surging/low idle issue

Did you ever figure this out, I am having the exact same issue. Surging idle on cold start up, cant seem to make up its mind on where it wants to be. I have a 1988 4runner with a 3vze in it.

When the truck has been sitting for more than a few hours, it starts with a really low rough idle and then the RPM jump up to about 1600-1800 and then it surges between 1000 and 1800 for a few minutes until the truck gets to operating temp. It also smells a little rich during this time. Once warm, the truck idles fine and runs great.

When the truck is warm and I turn it on, the idle is low, around 500, but then if I give it some gas, it will then idle normal around 800 or 900.

Any thoughts?
