Alternator Upgrade?
I was curious if anyone knew of a junkyard or similar cheap upgrade for the alt. I have a 90p/u. Any info would be appreciated. I thought the 4runners might have more amps since they have more lights and electronics.

There's also a few places that you can have your stock Toy alt re-wound. But I don't remember the names, or a price range, sorry.

was thinking about doing something like this as well. i have a large stereo, am putting some rock lights underneath and am picking up a winch soon so could use some more amps. is there anything else that has to be upgraded to handle the higher amps or are you just good to go?

They can upgrade the stock wimpy 60 amp to 130 amp, 75 of which is available at idle! I paid $170.00 shipped both ways @ little over a year ago.

I just wanted to comment that I have recently purchased an aftermarket reman and a Toyota reman, and the Toyota reman was so much better workmanship its not even funny. I bought a new Toyota battery too for my pickup.
An option instead of trying to high horse the alternator is to minimize the power consumption. For instance, instead of using 130 watt incandescents, try using 35 watt HID's. Put some good capacitors on your sub amps to smooth out the current draw. Try a hydraulic winch instead of an electric one, they run cooler anyway. You can even replace your headlamps with HID's and get rid of 5 or 6 amps.
Even so, before you go buying a new alternator, do a DC current test if do not have an ammeter and see how much you are really using under these "severe" trail conditions.
Just a few thoughts! Then go by a high amp alternator if it makes you feel good!

Dual alts is possible if you don't have A/C (there is mod info some where around I've seen it, don't remember where) try welding websites... I think I saw one on one of them...maybe Linc-arc?... they also make a 200A alt that can be fitted...
other tricks you can do is switch all lighting to LEDs... almost 0 current draw with them and longer life too.

Also...is the MR2 alternator a plug and play...and from what years?
Optioins are good when it comes to building these rigs.
