alternator issues. please help

I have a 87 4runner. i was driving it the other day around town and my charge warning light came on and my gauges stop working except for speedomoter. i check the alternator and knew i hadn't been replaced or fixed at all so i decided to get a new one thinking it was that. But it wasn't. My guess is that it has some thing to do with wiring to or from my alternator. i'm not that good with electrical work any ideas on what i should be looking would be. have this happened to anyone else. can i fix it on my own or should i take it to a shop.

belt bad? or the ground could be crap
