On sleeping on it, and thinking what it would take to get the alt glowing red hot, I'm thinking that would take a LOT of amps. And the only thing capable of providing that many amps would be the battery, not the alt itself. So my best guess as to what happened is that there was a failure of insulation somewhere in the copper coil in the alternator, which caused a short circuit, allowing mega current to flow from the battery, through the coil of the alt, and back to the battery. In that scenario, voltage would not have increased, and the only components damaged would be (obviously) the alternator, and possibly the battery itself and the wiring between the battery and alt. The wiring would include the positive cable, and also whatever ground straps tie the engine back to the neg post of the battery. If you're seeing melting on the insulation of the wiring to the alt, that would tend to confirm that scenario.
If local boneyards don't have what you need, try http:www.car-part.com It's a portal to hundreds of junkyards around the country, and it will list the ones that have the part you're looking for, sorted by distance from you, and showing price and phone #. You might find one close enough to drive to, otherwise many yards are willing to ship.
